Drunk driver kills homeless man under Gulf Freeway overpass

There was a fatal accident this morning and police suspect drunk driving is to blame. A homeless man was taking shelter beneath an overpass on the Gulf Freeway when he was struck by a vehicle around 2:45 a.m.  Apparently the woman driving the Nissan Altima involved in the crash tried to turn left onto Airport Boulevard from the Gulf Freeway feeder road northbound when she lost control. The driver of the Nissan was not injured in the crash but she showed signs of intoxication and failed a field sobriety test. News reports did not identify the homeless man or the alleged drunk driver.

Fatal accident on North Houston Rosslyn Road

A fatal accident involving two vehicles occurred on North Houston Rosslyn Road just before 2:00 a.m. this morning. A Nissan Altima passenger car collided with a blue-colored Chrysler van, apparently because the woman driving the van attempted an illegal u-turn, causing the collision (according to Channel 13’s report). A male passenger in the van was killed in the crash, the female driver was transported to Ben Taub hospital with serious injuries that required surgery. During the accident the vehicles struck a power pole, interrupting power supply to the area. Channel 13’s reporter stated that police officers’ preliminary investigation showed alcohol was involved.

Girl at birthday party hit by suspected drunk driver who fled

A man was arrested after seriously injuring a young girl with his vehicle and fleeing the scene, according to Channel 11 News. Witness Cindy Flores told reporters the man lost control of his black-colored Nissan Altima, then struck the girl who was enjoying a birthday party in a driveway of a home in the 2100 block of Floral Street in Houston. The girl was thrown up onto the hood of the vehicle, and the driver took off. The girl’s father jumped in his truck and chased the Nissan, leading police to the driver who was stopped about a half-mile away. The girl was responsive when taken to the hospital, and suffered a broken leg and a gash on her head. The girl’s age is stated as 4-years old but also 6-years old in the Channel 11 story.

Alleged drunk driver dies after crashing into HFD ambulance

A speeding driver who is suspected of driving drunk died in an accident early this morning when he crashed into the rear of a Houston Fire Department ambulance that was stopped on Kempwood Drive at Ryson Street to pick up a patient. Two paramedics were getting out of the ambulance when they heard screeching tires.  They then saw a young man driving a white-colored Nissan Altima approaching at an estimated speed of 80MPH, in a residential area no less.  One of the paramedics was able to react quickly enough to jump clear before the collision, but the other jumped back into the driver’s seat before the Altima struck the ambulance. That paramedic was transported to the hospital for observation. The driver of the Nissan Altima had to be rescued by Houston Fire Department because he was trapped inside his severely damaged car: he was rushed to Ben Taub hospital but did not survive. The driver has been identified as 21-year old David Lopez. Police said drunk driving was definitely a factor in causing the accident.  Channel 11’s story is here. Channel 2’s story is here.
