Smart car wrecked by Kroger 18-wheeler, US 59 in Porter

The driver of a tiny Smart car was badly hurt in a crash with a Kroger 18-wheeler on US 59 in the Porter area. The Montgomery County Police Reporter web site says the wreck happened around 1:00 a.m. Saturday between FM 1314 and Community Drive. The woman driving the Smart car was found laying in the roadway in the southbound lanes of US 59 having apparently been ejected out of the rear of the vehicle. The accident happened when the 18-wheeler driver executed a lane change and failed to see the smaller vehicle, striking the Smart car and pushing it into a concrete barrier. The lady driving the Smart car was last listed as being in critical condition at Memorial Hermann in Houston.

A motorcycle rider was injured in an accident this morning when he was hit by a wrong-way driver in the HOV lane of the Southwest Freeway (US 59) during this morning’s rush hour.  The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. at 59 and Hillcroft.  METRO officials say the wrong-way driver was elderly, and that after the motorcycle was struck by the wrong-way vehicle it then hit a third vehicle.  The motorcyclist was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.

Passenger ejected, killed on US 59: drunk driving to blame say police

Police believe drunk driving was to blame for yet another fatal accident in the Houston area. At around midnight last night a 29-year old male driver and his 34-year old male passenger were traveling on the Southwest Freeway (US 59) near Edloe in a Nissan 350z sports car when the driver lost control and crashed into the concrete median. The sports car flipped over the median, rolled over, and landed in the beginning of the HOV lane, sliding down the freeway. The passenger was ejected in the accident and his body slid around 150 feet: he was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the Nissan refused a breathalyzer test, however we are in a no refusal period through July 4th, so one way or the other police will obtain an alcohol test from the driver. Channel 13’s report of the accident is here.
