Woman crashes SUV through wall of Houston bank

Police are working to figure out what caused a woman to lose control of her SUV and crash through the wall of a Bank of America in northeast Harris County Thursday afternoon. Authorities have said that the 40-year old woman driving the SUV did not suffer from any unanticipated medical condition such as a heart attack or blackout that would explain the car accident. The SUV was completely inside the building, breaking desks and computers as it plowed through the bank. Skid marks were also visible inside. Fortunately no injuries were reported to the driver or to customers inside the bank.  Perhaps the driver misunderstood what’s meant by “drive-through banking” (who said lawyers don’t have a sense of humor).

Video shows Smith & Hassler clients’ car accident with GEICO insured

The Youtube video below shows a near head-on collision between three Smith & Hassler clients riding in a Hyundai Elantra compact car and a GEICO insured driver in a Mitsubishi Eclipse. This serious car accident happened on July 2, 2010 in Tomball, Texas and was captured on the dashboard camera of a Tomball Police Department patrol car that was traveling behind our clients’ Hyundai. As you can see from the video, the collision happened on a rainy day. The GEICO insured’s vehicle (for reasons unknown) cross the center line of the two lane roadway and struck our client’s vehicle nearly head-on. The impact stopped our clients’ car dead and the GEICO insured’s vehicle was thrown into a water filled drainage ditch to the right of the roadway. Our clients were transported by EMS to the hospital and subsequently had follow-up care. GEICO paid their insured’s bodily injury policy limit to settle our clients’ injury claims and also paid for our client’s totaled Hyundai.

What the Toyota sudden acceleration and resulting injuries and deaths have reinforced is that single car accidents are not always due to driver error. Sometimes a vehicle defect may either be responsible for the initial accident, or may may injuries or death more likely due to design, manufacturing or warning defects for which the vehicle manufacturer is responsible. If you or a loved on have been seriously injured in a car accident and believe a failure on the part of the vehicle may have contributed to serious injury or loss of life, call the experienced personal injury attorneys at Smith & Hassler for a free consultation regarding your potential products liability case.

Woman killed, 2 injured in car crash near Greenway Plaza, Houston

February 8, 2011: Two women were injured and sent to hospital and another woman died in a car crash Tuesday evening. The driver apparently lost control of her car around 7:00PM along Westpark near Buffalo Speedway in Houston according to the police.  The three women, all of whom were elderly, were in a Lexus sedan. The driver crashed through two gates at a senior living center, traveled across Westpark and went off the road, ultimately landing in a ditch after striking a fence. Witnesses told police that it appeared the Lexus was traveling at 70MPH when it left the roadway and crashed through the senior center. The women in the car were taken to Memorial Hermann Medical Center where the back seat passenger was pronounced dead. Police plan to question the driver to see if she has a medical condition that would explain her sudden loss of control of the vehicle.
