Two killed in four car accident at Beltway 8 and Antoine

Two people were killed and several others injured in a four vehicle accident at the intersection of Beltway 8 feeder and Antoine. According to media accounts of the accident, it started when a 17-year old driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck ran through a red light, colliding with an SUV occupied by a family of four. A 34-year old woman and a 15-year old boy in the SUV lost their lives; the father, driving the SUV, and a daughter, riding in the rear seat, were transported to hospital.

After it was struck by the pickup truck the SUV rolled onto two other vehicles causing additional injuries to those occupants.

An article that recently appeared on the Houston Chronicle’s web site states that Houston leads the entire nation in red light runner fatal accidents. T-bone type crashes have perhaps greater potential to cause serious injury or death than any other type of motor vehicle collision because of the proximity of the point of impact to the occupants of the vehicle.

Running a red light to try and get where you are going a few minutes sooner is simply not worth the risk and, as in his tragic case, endangers the lives of other innocent drivers.

Fatal car accident on Highway 290 at Antoine

A car accident on Highway 290 at Antoine around 3:30 a.m. involved one fatality. Two vehicles were involved, a dark-colored sedan and a mid-size SUV that appears to be a Toyota Forerunner. Channel 13’s report from the scene indicated someone was ejected from one vehicle, though which vehicle wasn’t clear. From the damage to the vehicles it appears the car rear ended the SUV causing the Toyota to spin out, however police are still investigating. All westbound lanes of Highway 290 were closed to traffic as police worked the accident scene.

Griselda Aza, alleged drunk driver kills 2 on Highway 249 at Antoine

Two people were killed by a drunk driver in a two car accident around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday on State Highway 249 at Antoine in Houston. Griselda Aza, 33, driving a pickup truck northbound on SH 249 ran a red light at Antoine and crashed into the driver’s side of a silver Honda heading westbound on Antoine. A woman driving the car (Darlene Hubbard) and a male passenger (Alphonse Jackson, Jr.) were both killed on impact. There were two Harris County Sheriff’s deputies at the intersection at the time: one actually stopped to avoid being hit by the pickup. Griselda Aza was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in stable condition where a blood draw revealed a blood alcohol content of .217 according to a Channel 11 story, which would make the woman almost two and one half times the legal limit for intoxication. Aza has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. Channel 2’s story.

METRO bus accident on Antoine sends 9 people to hospital

After a multi-vehicle accident that involved a METRO bus yesterday morning, nine people were hospitalized. Police say that traffic was backed up when METRO bus number 5891 crashed into other vehicles at around 9am. The location of the accident was the 3100 block of Antoine in northwest Houston. Bus passenger Chris Tidwell told Channel 11 News that the METRO bus accelerated and hit the car in front. Wilfred Wilkins, another passenger, said the car that the bus hit lifted off the ground and partially came through the windshield of the bus, then that car swerved away from the bus striking two more vehicles. Wilkins injured his wrist during the collision and said the scene was chaotic because the bus passengers did not know what was happening. In total, the bus and ten other vehicles were damaged. One accident witness, Wilhemina Ellison said the driver of the METRO bus was not to blame because a car cut in front of the bus, and the driver reacted to avoid it. Officials said seven people on the METRO bus were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, and two people from the other vehicles involved. METRO has said the bus driver will be taken off the road until METRO‘s investigation of the accident is completed.
